A Call from Beyond the Stage
The story begins with a heart-wrenching moment in June 2011. Jean, a retired music teacher, received a call from her son informing her of her mother's passing just as she was about to take the stage at the O2. This unexpected tragedy became the catalyst for her remarkable performance.
"It hit me like a ton of bricks," she recalls. "But my mother's voice echoed in my mind, reminding me of her words, 'I paid two and sixpence for your piano lessons, you get on there and entertain.'" This moment of clarity transformed her performance, and she delivered a standing ovation from the audience.
An Unlikely Audition
Jean's journey to BGT began with her late husband's decision to enter her into the competition without her knowledge. With 60,000 entrants, she was chosen to audition, a hilarious experience as she arrived at the NEC with a portable piano wrapped in a duvet. The judges' reaction was priceless, and her boogie woogie rendition of a carol secured her a spot in the next round.
The filmed audition in Manchester was a nerve-wracking affair, but Jean's talent shone through. She recalled, "I had a terrific audition, and the reveal was the most intense moment." Her unique style, described as 'Victoria Wood on acid' by Amanda Holden, set her apart and earned her a place in the final.
A Star is Born
Jean's time on BGT catapulted her into the spotlight, leading to a successful tour across the UK. The experience was a laugh a minute, and she cherished the memories made with fellow finalists. Her newfound fame brought her to major arenas and even to the Dominion in London to watch 'We Will Rock You'.
The impact of her success was evident in her hometown, Huntington. "Half my pupils from the school I taught at were standing outside when I played at the NIA in Birmingham," she shared. This personal connection to her roots made the experience even more meaningful.

Jean's talent has taken her on a global journey, performing in the United States, Europe, the United Arab Emirates, and India. Today, Jean lives in Stoke-on-Trent with her Dutch husband, Hans, whom she married in 2020. She regularly streams live performances to a global audience via social media, sharing her passion with the world. Her upcoming concert at St John's Church in Walsall Wood is a testament to her enduring talent and love for music.
"I'm having a terrific life with playing and enjoying traveling and concerts here, there, and everywhere," she says with a smile. "It's wonderful."
